Brooklyn, NYC
In contrast to the previous night’s divey excesses, this evening was exceedingly sensible – shopping and laundry – but no less exciting for the wee frisson of celebrity brought by the former, and the iconic Americana of the latter.
Shopping took place at the Greene Hill Food Co-op , where the organic produce is bounteous, the 2D design witty and cute, the checkout fully manual, and no less an eminence than Adrian Grenier*, one of the nearly 2000 dedicated members. He left the very well established and ‘higher decile’ co-op in Park Slope after factions formed regarding his willingness to perform the duties of the post. Specifically, serving the community for 2 hours and 45 minutes once every four weeks, 13 times per calendar year.
The HuffPo has covered this in rich detail.
Many readers may be excited to know that Adrian’s food and neighbourhood politics are as right-on as his camera-friendly looks are sweet and symmetrical, or that brushing arms with him during a scramble for the last loin of organic bacon was a very real possibility that night. However, I remained cool as a locally-sourced cucumber (being more of a Turtle – or even Ari – woman, myself), as we approached the building.
It’s a good thing Adrian wasn’t doing his shift hefting sacks of kale or totting up the tally on the till that night, as my (single) roommate and I looked for all the world like the perfect Brooklyn lesbian couple and I might have killed her chances with him.
Onwards, then, to the Laundromat, where we gaily did our laundry. Sound banal? It wasn’t. The place looked great. Timeless. Cassavetan. I was in a frenzy. Here are some pics:
Yes, that is a candy machine dispensing a collector’s set of ‘Hood Hounds’. Gold.
*Star of the HBO hit show ‘Entourage’
**For those who like to play: Adrian Grenier was in The Devil Wears Prada with Meryl Streep; Streep was in The River Wild with Kevin Bacon.
